Gasp! Apologies, I have to collect myself. Look at this sublime work by Brisbane artist John Honeywill. John’s work will hang in the central venue at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery and we know there will be many community connections to John, who taught in Bundaberg at two State Schools across 12 years.
Last year John was QAGOMA’s first Artist in Residence in their Open Studio Series, and in this collection of QAGOMA videos he mentions that when he moved to Bundaberg in 1974, it was an important coincidence to also be the first year that the Flying Arts School commenced tutorials there. John is represented by Philip Bacon Galleries in Brisbane, and Michael Reid in Sydney and Berlin, and we’re so thrilled that his work will join us in Bundaberg.
John, what is your art practice?
I am a painter whose main interests lie with still life. I have worked with oils on linen mainly in recent years.
Who is your studio companion?
My studio companion is our dog, Gus, who is an 11 year old Miniature Schnauzer.
What are you working on in your studio now?
I am currently working on paintings for an exhibition at Michael Reid Gallery, Sydney in October.
How has the current imposed isolation changed what you’re doing? Has something really surprised you during this transition to ‘artist in quarantine’?
The current situation hasn’t directly affected my daily routine – though at times distracting. While disturbing, it has been reassuring the creative inputs by all the arts, whether it has been with humour, beauty or sharing of information. And as we have all turned inwards to our private spaces, it has been affirming in working with still life.
